HISTORY:
The SM Mall of Asia (MOA) is a colossal shopping complex located in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines. Its history dates back to the early 2000s when SM Prime Holdings, the largest retail and mall operator in the Philippines, envisioned creating a world-class retail and entertainment destination.
Construction of SM Mall of Asia began in 2002 on reclaimed land along the scenic Manila Bay. The project was led by SM Prime Holdings' visionary founder, Henry Sy Sr. The complex was designed to not only be a shopping center but a multifunctional development that combined retail, dining, entertainment, and leisure offerings. In May 2006, the first phase of SM Mall of Asia was officially opened to the public. This marked the completion of a significant portion of the mall, introducing a vast array of shops, restaurants, and entertainment options. The mall quickly gained popularity due to its impressive size, diverse offerings, and strategic location near the bay area.
One of the iconic features of SM Mall of Asia is the MOA Eye Ferris wheel. Standing tall at 180 feet, it offers panoramic views of Manila Bay and the surrounding cityscape. The MOA Eye became an instant landmark and a symbol of the mall's grandeur. Over the years, SM Mall of Asia underwent expansions and enhancements, solidifying its reputation as one of the world's largest shopping centers. The mall's popularity continued to grow as it attracted both local shoppers and tourists alike.
